Mass Media: Newspapers 9/9/09

As an introduction to our unit on newspapers, I have asked each of you to spend some time with a newspaper finding an article that interests you. As millennial, you are more adept at searching online and having a great deal of information available to you with a click of your mouse.

For homework, I would like each of you to post a comment on this blog telling me in one paragraph how finding an article in the newspaper is different from browsing on the Internet.

Finding an article on the web is different than on the newspaper, for several reasons. On the newspaper things are more neat, and you can change the pages with your hands. Also the newspaper's stuff can be more accurate and new. The web has older stuff, and in my opinion it'd be easier to read things from the newpaper, which would make me pay attention more.

using the internet is more manageable than a news paper. i say this because with a computer u can just use the "ctrl find" function and you will be taken to directly what you want. now with a news paper, you have to flip from page to page, section to section.... it drives me crazy, most of my news paper usually end up on the floor or all over the table. the internet is the best way to get your news.

Finding an article in the newspaper can be time consuming, the first thing you have to do is find the section you are looking for. Such as world news, local news, entertainment, sports, ect.

Once you found the section, you must find the page number. The page numbers are usually in the corner. Most articles that are on the front page are long, so the article will continue on another page in the section. This number will usually be in bold at the bottom of the article.
Using the internet is much easier. You can cut your time in half by just going on to a search engine and type in the information you want to know. The internet also has anything you want to know from whatever time in history, while the newspaper will give you information about the current events of the day. Another reason why the internet is better is if you want to get more information about the article your reading you can click on another link.

While I have not interacted with a newspaper in quite sometime (my subscription to USA Today started on Tuesday), I am starting to remember how much I like the tactile feel of the newspaper in my hands. While I know it sounds a bit lame, I like folding the newspaper, taking it with me, underlining parts and showing off articles. I can't do that with the internet, unless I print it in an easy to read-with-no-advertisement-format.

I know that this might seem like a strange assignment, but I think that to many people in our generation, newspapers might as well be extinct. This assignment was meant to help you start thinking about how dissemination of information has changed in the last 10+ years-- or since you started your educational career.

I must say that I am intrigued by the comments that have been posted, and I can't wait for the rest of the class to post.

Newspaper.....Internet......that is the question?....... News has come a long way since back in the day. It use to take weeks for the paper to get around. Now, you can get news instanlty on your cell phone. For this new era the internet fits our day to day schedules a lot more conveniently. Instead of sitting at the table reading the news paper, we can just google what we need to know and there is is. The onl thing about the paper that is better is that it has local advertisements that are specific to that area. Its alot easier to understand and find. Also it has the obituaries(.spelling...?) which are very difficult to find online.

Finding an article in the newspaper that I found interesting was diffucult. It is much easier to just search something of the topic you want to look at on the computer. Whenever you look on the computer it is just much easier to find and search for whatever you are looking for. When you look in the newspaper you can lose pages, have to flip to different pages to read parts of the article, and you can only read what is there. Online, you can search past articles that you need to read to fill you in on news you might have missed, which you can't do with a newspaper unless you keep all of them. I think it is much easier to just use the internet.

Using the internet is a more useful way to find information you have to find. The newspaper is good for local news. But what if you want to find something from another countie or state. You would have to call someone if you did not have internet.
The internet has billions of sources you can use to find the information you need to fine. The newspaper on the otherhand only has limited things you can read. So that is why the internet could be so much more easier then using a newspaper.

There are many differences between finding an article on the internet and finding one in a newspaper. One difference is that a newspaper article is often more organized and almost always totally factual. While an internet article cannot be trusted as well as a newspaper. On the other hand the internet is easier to access and offers information on almost any topic imaginable.

Finding an article is much more difficult on a newspaper than online. When you're online all you have to do is go to Google and type in what you want, and it is instantly at your fingertips. In a paper you actually have to search for what you want, which can take some time. Time that in this day and age we don't have. The internet is a much more convenient news source.

Rummaging through the newspaper to find an article is tedious considering the workings of the Internet. Thumbing through the print is a dying art. The Internet offers articles that can be found in the paper in addition to information from innumerable other sources. Search engines provide convenient, easy to use portals into the vast, informative Internet. This knowledge is accessible with out the sections, page numbers, and continuations newspapers impose on us. Nevertheless, the paper offers a casual look into everything local, in spite of the Internet age. Sometimes, in this high-speed world, it’s nice to enjoy the relaxed luxury of reading the paper. But for me, even if it goes unread, the newspaper always finds its home in my guinea pig’s cage.
