Mass Media: Television Unit

For this assignment, you will begin researching a television show that you find interesting. Please follow the directions that I give throughout this blog post.

For this task, you will be using an article from time magazine and conduct brief internet "research". You will be required to post something on this blog.

First: Read this article entitled "How I Chose The List"

Second: Read through the entire list of Time's Top 100 Television Shows. Choose at least 5 shows that you found interesting. Read about these shows by clicking the title.

Third: Out of the 5 shows that you choose, pick 1 show that you would like to research more.

Fourth: Do "internet research" on your chosen show. This could be at wikipedia, tv.com, Entertainment Weekly or any other reliable television outlet

Fifth: Post a comment to this blog. This comment should include the following:

  • The names of the 5 television show that you read more about.

  • The name of the show that you wanted to research more about.

  • Why you wanted to research that show (at least 4 sentences)

  • What you found out after you researched your show (at leat a paragraph)

  • Where you found this information

If this is not completed by the end of class it is homework.

The five television shows I thought were interesting were the Simpsons, King of the Hill, ABC's Wild World of Sports, South Park, and The X-Files. I picked these shows because they are what sound most intersting to me. The Simpsons show started out as a family cartoon and as the popularity went up so did the crude humor and today this day is still loved by millions of people. King of the Hill is considered the most realilistic cartoon portraying the average American familys life. ABC's Wide World of Sports was the Sportscenter before Sportscenter was around. It brought the information about sports that were happening around the country to the every day family. For the past decade South Park has been amusing people of all ages. The show has some of the dirtiest analogies and critisims on tv. Finally The X-Files is one of the best science fiction shows that ever ran on television. The show was very popular and made two movies based on the television series.

FREAKS AND GEEKS
THE PRICE IS RIGHT
THE SIMPSONS
SOUTH PARK
SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS

I chose Spongebob Squarepants as a television show that I would like to know more about.
I chose Spongebob because I basically grew up with it. I remember the first episode airing after the Kids Choice Awards and how much I loved it. It will be on from time to time now, and when it is on I will watch it and see that there is adult humor mixed in with the children’s program. I still think the crude humor and silly antics are hilarious to the day.
I actually learned many things after I researched the show on Wikipedia. Some of the humor serve as innuendos that fly right over young viewers heads and hit an adult right in the face with jokes that are actually are intended for adults. The music on that show is actually pretty sick! Taking place under the ocean, why wouldn’t you hear some Hawaiian type of music? Well that’s exactly what you hear on the show. A soundtrack was released a long time ago (that I own) and it has bands performing songs for the show. On the soundtrack is bands such as Pantera, Motorhead, and Twisted Sister. The show is still airing today capturing the hearts of kids and adults.

The five television shows that I like that were on that list were Lost, The Office, Sports Center, The Super Bowl, and Survivor. Out of the five shows I would like to research the show "Lost". I think its a very interesting show. I like the characters and how the show is set up. How many shows or seasons are left and where the show is recorded at.
After researching the show I found out that "Lost" was recorded in Oahu, Hawii. There are only supposed to be 17 shows left in the show.I found this information on EU.com.

List of 5 shows I read about.
1. Lost
2. The Office (American)
3. The Price is Right
4. Seinfeld
5. The Simpsons
The Show I would like to research more about would probably be the Simpsons. It is a good show and it has been around for awhile. They continue to create new shows and series for it after all the years it has been on. I continue to watch the show now because they continue to make new shows. Other series like the Simpsons continue to re-air their shows over and over again.
They just made a episode for their 20 year anniversary. It was created by a man by the name of Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The show is about an average middle class family. The first airing of the show was on December 17, 1989. The show has broadcasted a total of 445 episodes. The series has won several Emmy’s, 26 Annie awards, and a Peabody award.
I found this information on Wikipedia.com.

1. An American Family
2. The Office (British)
3. Roseanne
4. Seinfeld
5. The Wire
Chosen: The Office (British)

Being a fan of "The Office", I decided to do some research on the British original. After watching the American version, it's eerie to watch the British version. The first episodes of both are nearly identical. I want to know more about the inspiration and conception of the original show.

Stephen Merchant started the series by making a home-made video in an attempt to get a job at the BBC. The show now has the popular documentary style because Merchant knew this would be an easier way for him to film. This format is also effectively used in the American version. He used a local University to film it and the show is currently filmed in the Teddington Studios office building next to the studios.

The five television shows I chose to look into are The Simpsons, South Park, Sienfeld, King of the Hill, and Freaks and Geeks. The one that I found most interesting was Freaks and Geeks. In the past I have seen a few episodes. This is the show I decided to learn more about. I wanted to because it is all about the high school experience through many different eyes of the school. Some being the cool hip kids; others the geeks. Also, it was very funny because I can relate to it.
After researching a little about it I found out several things. It appeared in TIME magazine as one of the Top !00 shows. But I guess I already knew that because that’s where I found it. Also, I learn that is was canceled after only twelve episodes were aired. It was on television in the 1999-2000 time. After being canceled it aired three more episodes. Lastly I found out that it was ranked 13th on the best series in the past 25 years list in Entertainment Weekly magazine. I found this information on Wikipedia.com.

1. The Real World
2. Roseanne
3. Seinfeld
4. The Simpsons
5. The Cosby Show

I would research The Real World. Mainly because I watch every season, both the Real World Road Rules Challenge, and the reality one. It’s basically just a reality show when 7 kids live under one roof for months. Cameras are always with them, and there’s an hour long show every week. It’s very entertaining because there is so much drama between them, and who doesn’t like to watch drama?
Real World is held on MTV, and there is actually 2 different types of real worlds. The first is the reality one with people living under the same roof, and the second is the Road Rules Challenge, when competitors go against each other but still live in the same house.

I learned from Wikipedia that The Real World has been a TV show since 1992. The last season which was my favorite (Real World Cancun), was their 22nd season. The 23rd season will be in December at Washington DC, and I cannot wait. You have to actually audition to be on the show, and if you’re picked then you go on the show and cameras video tape your interpersonal relationships. The show is just so entertaining, and I’m going to watch alllll the seasons.

1.Friends
2.My So Called Life
3.The Price Is Right
4.Roseanne
5.Freaks and Geeks

I would probably research the show “My So Called Life”. This show seems like a show that I would watch. I like shows that are simple and relate to me. Although this show probably won’t be simple I think that I can somewhat relate to it.

“My So-Called Life" is a mid-nineties teen drama series about a 15 year-old girl being a teenager and dealing with friends, guys, parents and school. This show originally aired on ABC from August 25, 1994, to January 26, 1995.

1. ALF
2. M*A*S*H
3. Peewees play house
4. the office (american)
5. x-Files

I chose Alf but you said no about 100 times so im going with M*A*S*H. I have every season of it and the movie and the history channel documentery on it so Im prettey well prepared.

The series premiered on September 17, 1972, and ended February 28, 1983, with the finale becoming the most-watched television episode in U.S. television history, with about 125 million viewers. The show is still broadcast in syndication on various television stations. The series, which covered a three-year military conflict, spanned 251 episodes and lasted eleven seasons.

Many of the stories in the early seasons are based on real-life tales told by real MASH surgeons who were interviewed by the production team. Like the movie, the series was as much an allegory about the Vietnam War (still in progress when the show began) as it was about the Korean War.

The five shows are
1. Friends
2. The Price is Right
3. Roseanne
4. Lost
5. Married with Children

The show that I want to read more about is The Price is Right. The reason I want to read more about this is because i have seen the show before. I watched it when Bob Barker was the host and I watched it when Drew Carey is the host. I want to see some of the older shows and how they went. Also i want to see if it had the same rules.

The Price Is Right is currently owned by the FremantleMedia subsidiary of the RTL Group. It first started by its creator Bob Stewart from the Goodson-Todman Productions in 1956 and was redone in 1972. Goodson-Todman, which later became Mark Goodson Productions, sold the show to FremantleMedia which was in 1996The Price Is Right tries audiences knowledge of the prices of many products.

5 Show:
1.I Love Lucy
2.American Idol
3.King of the Hill
4.Sesame Street
5.South Park

The show im going to do for our next project is going to be I love Lucy. Although this show began in 1951. I Love Lucy is a excellant show that continues to entertain millions of people all over the world. The success I would say lies within the sense of humor and nonsense. Each episode opens with a plausible situation (home economy, child rearing, post-dating a check)
An EXAMPLE OF THIS SHOW WOULD BE AN EPISODE WHEN:
(Lucy is starched, frozen, stuffed with chocolate, locked in a trunk, and lowered to the deck of a ship by helicopter. This show never seems to loose audience.

While the comic brilliance of Lucille Ball and the chemistry of the four main characters were cornerstones of the show, I Love Lucy owes much of its success to a behind the scenes band of Excellent creators. This show is still on air today after 58 years. That is extremely amazing because some shows do not even make it through a season.
