Writers Guild of America Strike

In order for you to know more about the Writers Guild of America strike, I am posting a link to the wikipedia page relating to the strike. While I found articles to post about the strike, I thought that the wikipedia page had more useful information that the article.
You DO NOT need to read the entire article-- it is long. Instead of reading the entire thing, please read the following Sections:

1. Issues in the strike
4. Effect on television
5. Response

Please post a 2 paragraph response illustrating demonstrating knowledge obtained from the reading. This blog post is worth 25 points and is due at the start of class Tuesday, April 20th.
Here is an interesting video from the writing staff of the office during the strike.

The Writer's Guild of America Strike seems to me like it was a VERY controversial and debated topic. I can understand the writer's side of this debate very well. It makes perfect sense that writer's would want more profit from their works. Yes, their work is being used by a large broadcasting company but that company would not have been successful if it wasn't for the "seed that grew the tree."

Another topic discussed in this strike was compensation for new media. The world is changing and evolving as is the technology. It only makes sense that the contracts for the writer's should change along with it. And these changes should benefit them in some way. There is no way to stop the media streamed across the internet, so yes, the broadcasting companies must learn to deal with that.

I'm hoping that I am understanding this correctly. If so, I strongly agree with the writer's vs. the broadcasting companies.

I agree with the picketers for what they are protesting because I would want to be paid a percentage of all the profits coming into the show. The internet plays a huge role in the shows ratings. It will not be long before the internet is the main source of watching television shows. For example whenever i missed a episode of "The Daily Show" I would just go on the interbet and watch it the next day.

When I read the wikipedia article I thought it was interesting that "The Daily Show" was a show to make an increase in ratings. These shows that came back without writers proved to be stronger as their ratings increased. The picketers had the right to be angry and protest what was going on and deserved some of the profit that was being brought in.

The Writer's Guild of America Strike in my opinion is a highly over rated topic. This act should not be allowed to take place. Writers get paid a ton of money for their work. If I made half of what they make I would be very happy. I understand why the writers go on strike, but to me its all greediness.
Taking the time to go on strike stops the show from airing. Depending on how long the strike is will have a huge affect on the show's future. New shows that just come out when going on strike usually don't survive the outcome. This to me is not worth it! People need to stop being so greedy and just let things go.

The Writers Guild of America strike was a huge deal and i understand why it was now, the writers wanted more money for their work and i agree. If i was a writer i would go on strike as well, because we all know that if you work hard you want every reward you can have.

The new technology seems like the second biggest deal of the strike, the wirters want more cash for their work when its on abc.com and hulu.com and others. I dont blame them because it still is THEIR work.

Two blog posts in two days... but anyways i def agree with the writers, if i wrote a show i would want to get money for people watchong it online. The writers make a great arguement. Online viewing is growing and if the writers did not get compensation we would lose many of our favorite shows. I was very disapointed when jerico left tv because of the strike, and many other shows were delayed.

I understand why the writers webt on strike because of there lack of profit. Since these writers were on strike for so long it really sent out a message to big studios. the writers do deserve a percentage of profit. If there not making enough money then they should be striking

It is alittle bit over rated though. The writers guild is just like pro athletes. They strike because they don't get paid enough but there still making millions. Stop complaining and the harder they work the more money they should get

I do not blame then writers for going on strike. I think they should get more profit. They are the behind the scene reason why we have movies to watch. They are the ones who know what we like and write the movies tht will catch our interrest.

Thinking back this strike didnt reakky affect me personally. I think that there was like a few reruns of Desperate Housewices thats all.

I think that the strike was nessary. Big companies make so much money, but aren't willing to really pay their employies for their work. they work hard and diserve a piece of the pie that they helped make.

however i think that more shows should improv like "The Daily Show" did. It would be alot funnier because its not as rehearsed. All in all i thought it was nessary, because they did the work they shold get paid.
