Reading Circle Journal: Update!

Seniors,

When your full book is due on Thursday, February 26th, you are also required to turn in a journal. In the past, students have had problems writing a journal and instead have simply written a summary. While summaries are sometimes important writings, I do not not simply want proof that you have read the text (your test score is the evidence I use for that).

Composing a journal entry is higher-level analytical writing as compared to a summary. Since these writings are sometimes more difficult to start, I am posting "possible journal entry questions" for each of the reading circle texts.

As a way to earn a few bonus points, you can post possible journal questions onto this blog entry.

This post will be updated through Wednesday evening (2/25), so please check back!

A good journal entry for Catch-22 would be how you feel about the actual Catch-22 and its trickyness.

P.S.
Your beard looked nice today and that blue shirt really complemented your skin tone
Your friend,

How do Nettie's letters differ from Celie's? How are they the same?

How are woman portrayed in Catch-22?

What do you think about the way the author placed the text on the pages? Some pages contained only one word while others had whole pages of text. Was this distracting and did it portray any meaning? Why do you think the author did this?

Why do you think the mother decided to killed herself and the father decide to live? Do you think he understood something that she did not?

What is eighteenth century New Orleans like? How does Rice describe the city in those times? What appeals to you as a reader?

What is the point in Vonnegut including the Cinderella story in it? Was he trying to parallel Cinderella and Billy? And what was this parallel supposed to contribute to the understanding of the novel?

These questions are for each book, one for each, one for each.

For Cat's Cradle...

What is your opinion of the fathers of the atom bomb, Dr. Hoenikker to be exact, given the details from the story?
Was he a bad person, crazy or just trying to explore science and couldn't help how his discoveries were used?

The Lovely Bones:
Pd. 7 - Michelle Webber

How has Mr. Harvey's past influence the decisions he's made today?

Why do you think Mr. Harvey continually ''checked'' back on the neighborhood? (thoughts and feelings)

Why do you think Susie's family fell apart in a time of need instead of pulling together?

How do you think her family will continue to deal with her death in the future?

Explain why you think Susie's mother will stay or not.

The Lovely Bones:

If you were Susie, explain whether or not you'd continue to watch your family if knowing you can't interact or intervene with their decisoins/life.

If you were Len Fennermen, how would you handle Susie's father, mother, and the rest of the family. (takie in consideration her father pinpointing Mr. Harvey without having proof.)

The time traveler's wife

the journal entry could be out clare's unconditional love. how all the warning signs were layed out for her of why she couldn't be with henry or what should stop her but she still kept loving him and found every reason to be with him.

OH p.s!
i think that since we are reading 1984 as a class 4th nine weeks that we shouldn't have to do reading circle books :)

A name is generally how the reader makes a personal connections to the charecthers in the novel, so what is your interpretation on why McCarthy chose to not give any of his charechers first names?
